The Poison Rally 1998 had its humble beginnings in a charming location called Boons, nestled between the scenic towns of Magaliesburg and Koster. Fondly remembered as the good old days, this rally brought together 683 enthusiasts for an unforgettable experience.
Imagine organizing a rally at a site accessible only via a 9km dirt road, powered solely by a generator. The atmosphere was vibrant and unconventional, with even the barmen finding entertainment through a backdrop of cartoon porn-TV. During those times, a refreshing beer could be enjoyed for just R3-00, adding to the overall excitement and the weekend’s entry were R80-00.
The Poison Rally marked a turning point in the rally scene, introducing several notable changes. One significant shift was the elimination of a late entrance fee, rewarding those who pre-paid with a complimentary Poison Rally T-Shirt. Considering the challenging dirt road, every participant received a printed Poison mug, becoming a cherished memento. Moreover, all entrants were treated to a scoop of the renowned Poison Punch, affectionately dubbed the "Dust remover."
Setting itself apart from traditional rally games like tug-of-war, slow races, and tire throws, the Poison Rally offered a diverse range of activities. Attendees eagerly engaged in thrilling competitions such as knife throwing, tomato tossing, gladiator-style contests, and the spirited fieta dronk game—an enjoyable drinking game.
The Poison Rally at Boons holds a special place in the history of these events, marking a time of transformation and unforgettable moments.

Concourse: Like everything else at the Poison Rally, was distinct. Bikes arriving on trailers would not be judged. Instead, judging was based on a point system tailored for each category, which included:

Standard class: As they come – the more standard the bike, the higher the points. The age and the mileage must be considered. Cleanliness plays a major part.

Rat class: Any bike – Matt black is compulsory. If you never clean your bike, the result is a dirty bike, not a Rat. Parts are not chosen – they are picked up. Lots of non-standard parts. Oil leaks compulsory.

Custom class: Standard plus custom parts e.g. indicators, chroming and spray jobs. Different in appearance from all the others. No doubt of mistaking this bike from stock bikes.

Chopper class: Style most important. Framework & fork extensions
compulsory. The more radical, the more points. The bare essentials. Very low seat height. Spoke wheels.

Cruiser class: Standard low-rider with custom parts. Chopper look without compulsory frame work. Designed for comfort and style.

Streetfighter class: Based on performance and street racing. Brutal look preferably with a big fat rear tyre. Anything which does not directly contribute to performance is kept to a minimal. Rear mudguard cut down or changed. Twin headlights.

These various classes added an extra layer of excitement and competition to the Poison Rally, catering to different tastes and preferences within the biking community.
